In the wake of the fire that killed 18,000 cows at a farm in Texas, USA, Mercy For Animals India has written to the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri Parshottam Rupala, urging safety audits of dairy farms across India. The letter highlights serious irregularities in the operation and management of commercial dairy farms in the country. The letter points out that cows in dairy farms are often kept in such cramped conditions that they lack space to move around or lie down comfortably. Most of these farms are unregistered, and many ignore the standards in the Guidelines for Environmental Management of Dairy Farms and Gaushalas published by the Central Pollution Control Board.
The letter also urges the government to publish the results of the audit to promote transparency and accountability and ensure that commercial dairy farms in India are operating in compliance with safety standards.
