Mercy For Animals Demonstrated the Adverse Impact of Meat Consumption on Water Use, Advocating for a Plant-Based Diet and Urging the Public to ‘Save Water by Choosing Vegan.’
Raipur, India (March 20, 2025) — Ahead of World Water Day, Mercy For Animals staged a powerful visual protest to raise awareness about the staggering water footprint of meat production at Marine Drive, Telibandha Lake, Raipur. Two activists, submerged in water tanks, wore symbolic costumes: one as a chicken, representing the immense amount of water consumed to produce meat, and the other as a pea, highlighting the lower water footprint of plant-based foods.
Volunteers stood with placards that read “producing 1kg of meat requires approximately 8,000 liters of water, while 1kg of vegetables demands a mere 322 liters.” This disparity highlights the environmental impact of our dietary choices and the urgent need for a shift towards more sustainable food systems.
“The water crisis is a global emergency, and the way we eat plays a critical role,” said Kushal Samaddar, organising coordinator at Mercy For Animals India. “We urge people to consider switching to a plant-based diet to build a sustainable future for all.”
Farms that raise animals for food consume vast amounts of fresh water for raising, feeding, and slaughtering animals, making animal agriculture responsible for nearly 20% of global fresh water usage. Switching to plant-based diets could reduce an individual’s food-related water use by up to 50%.
Mercy For Animals urges the public to consider the environmental consequences of their dietary choices and embrace plant-based options to reduce their water footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.
