The Protest Raised Awareness About The Harrowing Conditions Of Animals Raised For Food
DELHI — September 26, 2024 – Mercy for Animals India staged a powerful protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, drawing attention to the systemic abuse and exploitation of animals raised for food.
Mercy For Animals India activists dressed as a hen crammed in a cage, a sow confined in a gestation crate, and a buffalo tethered with a short rope, symbolizing the cruelty animals in the food industry endure. Placards held by the activists and other volunteers reinforced the importance of demanding equality and justice for all animals.
“This demonstration highlights the universal fight for justice and compassion for all sentient beings, regardless of species,” said Kushal Samaddar, Organising Coordinator at Mercy For Animals India. “By focusing on the systemic exploitation of animals, we hope to inspire people to rethink their choices. Our goal is to broaden the dialogue on equality to include all animals, who are often overlooked in discussions of justice and rights,” Mr. Samaddar added.
The protest shed light on the harsh conditions faced by buffaloes, sows, and hens in the food industry. The dairy and meat industry subjects buffaloes to forced pregnancies and traumatic separation from their calves. Sows are confined to gestation crates so small they cannot even turn around, leading to severe physical and mental distress. Hens suffer in cages smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, where they are debeaked without anesthesia and fed antibiotics to artificially boost egg production, leading to constant health issues. These practices exemplify the systemic cruelty that Mercy for Animals India is committed to ending.
Mercy for Animals India calls on consumers, policymakers, and the food industry to embrace plant-based food and help reduce the cruel treatment of animals. Transitioning to plant-based foods not only reduces the cruelty animals are subjected to but also leads to more sustainable and environmentally friendly outcomes.
