Cage-Free Eggs in India: Mercy For Animals India Asks Kareena Kapoor Khan to Push Marriott for Change

Monica Bilung September 17, 2025

What if one of Bollywood’s biggest stars could help change the lives of millions of suffering hens in India? Mercy For Animals India has sent a letter to Kareena Kapoor Khan, urging her to use her influence with Marriott India to push for a future free of cruel battery cages.

Recently, Mercy For Animals India held striking protests outside Marriott hotels, one in Kolkata and another in Chandigarh. The visuals caught the attention of passersby, and the media highlighted the urgent need for the company to honour their corporate commitment.

Marriott’s Big Promise, Still Unfulfilled

Back in 2018, Marriott International made a bold global commitment: By 2025, all of their hotels worldwide would use 100% cage-free eggs. This included shell eggs, liquid egg, and processed egg products across all owned, managed, and franchised properties.

It was an exciting step forward for animal welfare and sustainability. However, in India, Marriott has yet to demonstrate meaningful progress. Data is missing, transparency is lacking, reporting is nonexistent, and in regions like Asia, Africa, and the Middle East the company is falling behind.

The Hidden Cost of Your Breakfast Eggs

Behind Marriott’s delay lies a heartbreaking truth:

  • In India, 30–40 crore hens live in cramped battery cages.
  • Each hen’s space—for her entire life—is smaller than an A4 sheet of paper.
  • The birds can’t spread their wings, perch, or dustbathe.
  • Stress leads to injuries and even death.
  • Chicks often have the tips of their beaks painfully cut off without anaesthesia.
  • The hens are pushed to the limit, forced to lay 10 times more eggs than nature intended.

These intelligent, sentient, and curious birds deserve better than a lifetime of suffering.

Why Kareena Kapoor Khan?

Kareena is the face of Marriott India’s “Toh Aaj Jaana Kaha Hain?” campaign. She could use her voice to hold Marriott accountable and remind them that ethics and sustainability should be implemented, not just branded about, and that corporate accountability signifies reputable standards, which Marriott is falling seriously short of.

If Kareena takes a stand, she could help accelerate the move towards cage-free eggs in India, giving millions of hens a chance at a better life.
