Human Body ‘Served’ on a Plate: A Bold Call to Go Vegan on World Peace Day

Mercy For Animals September 20, 2024

On International Day of Peace or World Peace Day (September 21, 2024), we are reminded that peace isn’t just about the absence of conflict, it’s about the harmony we create through our daily choices. Reconsidering our food choices and consciously choosing plant-based foods is one of the most impactful ways to contribute to a more peaceful world.

Research shows that adopting a plant-based diet can reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70%, alleviating environmental strain and fostering a healthier planet. Additionally, over 80 billion land animals are slaughtered for food annually, enduring immense suffering that could be avoided with plant-based alternatives. Chickens, for example, are crammed by the thousands into sheds, deprived of sunlight and fresh air, living in their own waste. Many suffer broken bones, suffocate, or die during transport to slaughterhouses.

Transitioning to plant-based food systems helps reduce animal cruelty and suffering, contributing to a more peaceful existence for all living beings. Mercy For Animals India marked International Peace Day with a powerful demonstration in Pune, delivering the message: “Peace Begins on Your Plate.” The event featured an activist lying on a giant plate, dressed in a meat costume, surrounded by vegetables with an oversized knife and fork beside them. The striking visual was designed to provoke passersby to reflect on the suffering animals endure for food and urge them to consider the ethical implications of their dietary choices.

Volunteers also staged a thought-provoking street play that depicted a bloodied human served on a plate, symbolizing the violence inherent in consuming animal products. Through this poignant performance, Mercy for Animals India encouraged people to consider plant-based foods as a path towards a more peaceful and compassionate world for all beings.
