Mercy For Animals India Exposes Marriott’s Silence on Cage-Free Egg Commitment in Goa

Mercy For Animals November 28, 2025

In a striking demonstration outside the Goa Marriott hotel, our activists called out Marriott International’s ongoing failure to meet its global pledge to source 100% cage-free eggs by the end of 2025.

Dressed in bathrobes and blindfolds, volunteers stood beside others confined in symbolic cages, representing the millions of hens trapped in India’s egg industry.

A Broken Pledge in the Final Hour

In December 2018, Marriott announced its plan to transition to a 100% cage-free egg supply chain across nearly 9,100 properties in 142 countries by the end of 2025. Yet, with just one month left before that deadline, the company has failed to disclose any progress or roadmap for India—one of its fastest-growing markets.

Across India, an estimated 40 crore hens continue to languish in cramped battery cages—wire enclosures so small the birds can barely move, stretch, or spread their wings. These systems cause immense physical and psychological suffering, making Marriott’s lack of transparency especially troubling.

Expansion Without Accountability

Marriott aims to make India its third-largest market globally after the U.S. and China. The chain already operates 158 hotels across the country, with 112 more in development, yet it has made no visible progress on its animal-welfare commitments in the region.

This contradiction – rapid growth paired with corporate inaction – has drawn sharp criticism from animal-protection advocates, who say that global expansion should not come at the cost of compassion or credibility.

A Growing Global Movement for Hens

Mercy For Animals India is working alongside international organisations pressing Marriott to fulfill its promise and adopt cage-free sourcing. The campaign is part of a broader, worldwide effort to ensure that multinational corporations follow through on their 2025 animal-welfare commitments.

As deadlines loom, Marriott’s silence stands in stark contrast to other hospitality and food-service brands that have already transitioned—or are actively reporting progress—toward cage-free systems.

The Call for Change

Mercy For Animals India’s protest in Goa serves as a reminder that corporate promises must translate into measurable action. For the millions of hens still confined in cages, time is running out.
