Mercy For Animals Volunteers Urge People to Practice Nonviolence by Eating Plant-Based

Activists with Mercy For Animals India Foundation dressed as peas assembled in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Gandhi Circle and held placards reading “Peas = Peace; Go Vegan” and “Peace Begins on Your Plate,” urging people to choose plant-based food. The demonstration coincided with World Vegetarian Day and Gandhi Jayanti.

Mahatma Gandhi taught that nonviolence begins with what we eat. He said,

“I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.”

Celebrated on October 1 each year, World Vegetarian Day aims to bring awareness to the ethical, environmental, health, and humanitarian benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. October is Vegetarian Awareness Month. Gandhi Jayanti is observed on October 2 to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. It is also known as International Day of Nonviolence, honouring Gandhi’s commitment to fighting injustice through peaceful means.

We can all do our part to promote peace by choosing plant-based foods.
