Why Mercy For Animals India Took to the Streets (and a Bed) to Challenge Marriott’s Broken Promise

Mercy For Animals April 29, 2026

Luxury is often used to mask a grim reality. At the bustling Carter Road in Mumbai, passers-by recently witnessed a scene that stopped them in their tracks. A plush, designer hotel bed sat right on the pavement. However, this wasn’t an advertisement for a getaway. Instead, it served as an urgent wake-up call for Marriott International.

Exposing the Reality Under the Bed

Because of your unwavering support, Mercy For Animals India activists pulled back the covers on Marriott’s failed promises. First, activists sprawled across the bed in premium nightwear. Meanwhile, they held placards reading, “Marriott is hiding something under the bed.”

Consequently, when the covers were lifted, they revealed stacks of blood-tinted egg crates beneath those flowing sheets. These represent the lakhs of hens Marriott continues to confine in industrial animal agriculture. Specifically, these hens remain trapped in cruel battery-cage systems. As a result, they are denied even the space to stretch their limbs. Most are forced to live in an area smaller than an A4 sheet of paper.

Holding Marriott Accountable

In 2018, Marriott committed to a 100% cage-free supply chain by the end of 2025. Nevertheless, that deadline has now passed. Currently, Marriott plans to make India its third-largest market globally. It has 158 operational hotels and 112 more in the pipeline. Yet, despite this growth, it has failed to report any progress for the region.

A Growing Movement Across India

This striking display in Mumbai is only the latest chapter in a nationwide push for accountability. In addition to the Carter Road demonstration, Mercy For Animals India has led powerful protests at Marriott properties in Goa, Kolkata, and Chandigarh. These regional successes show that from coast to coast, we are refusing to let this corporate giant ignore its commitments.

Your Voice Drives Our Progress

Ultimately, this lack of transparency shows the global giant in a poor light. We believe corporate responsibility should not stop at the border. Furthermore, with your help, we are intensifying the pressure. Your voice is the reason we can stand up to these billion-dollar corporations. Because of you, we are demanding they eliminate the worst cruelty from their supply chains.

In conclusion, we cannot allow Marriott to ignore the suffering of crores of hens. This progress is only possible when we act together. For this reason, we need you to join us in telling Marriott that broken promises are unacceptable.

You can make a difference right now. We need you to join us in telling Marriott that broken promises are unacceptable.
